Lesson 6

Dasha: the timing of life

A dasha is a period ruled by one planet. The most used system, Vimshottari, covers a 120-year cycle.

The nine periods are Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17.

Your first dasha is the lord of your birth nakshatra. Its remaining length depends on how far the Moon had travelled through that nakshatra.

Each mahadasha is split into nine antardashas (sub-periods) in the same order, starting with its own planet.

A dasha gives results according to where its planet sits in your chart: its house, sign strength and the planets with it.
